Personnel from the Nigerian Army's 9 Brigade recovered 1,671 Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, in an apartment in Lagos State's Olodi-Apapa area yesterday.
Three people were were apprehended at the residence, but the main suspect was alleged to be on the run.
Ballot papers, cutlasses, and Indian hemp were also discovered in the apartment.
The unexpected finding was uncovered during a preliminary inquiry of an event that happened in the region yesterday.
Brig. Gen. Isang Akpaumontia, who paraded the suspects and recovered PVCs, ballot papers, and other materials in front of media at the Ikeja Cantonment, said the arrest and seizure were made as a result of a tip-off.
The registration number on the majority of the discovered PVCs was 2022, while others were 2011, 2012, and 2021, with all of the owners being Lagos State citizens.
"Earlier today (yesterday), three young guys were caught with 1,671 PVCs," Akpaumontia told media. This was after receiving preliminary information. We were able to apprehend them with the assistance of the Department of State Services, or DSS.
"They were apprehended with narcotics, a blade, charms, and over 1,000 PVCs. They were apprehended in the Apapa neighborhood, in a residence where we had tracked them down. The key suspect, the owner of the residence, was tracked down to a motel. Nevertheless, he took off.
"We are going to turn over these suspects and exhibits to our immediate headquarters to do the necessary because things have to be done the right manner to dissuade those who think they can take laws into their own hands and get away with it."
